Getting to Know Marco Rubio

For Marco Rubio, the joy has truly been in the journey – from his humble beginnings in a working class family as the son of a bartender, through his days at South Miami Senior High School; his collegiate days where he attended both the University of Florida for undergraduate studies and the University of Miami for law school, to his first foray in public service as a City Commissioner for West Miami; his election to the Florida House of Representatives in the 111th District; and most recently, his ascendancy to the Speaker of the House position – Marco Rubio has risen from obscurity to statewide prominence while maintaining both his perspective and the core values that are at the heart of his personal success and his vision for the future of the country.

Throughout his career in the Florida House, Marco has championed a consistently conservative, limited-government approach to governance. One of the major legislative initiatives he supported was an overhaul of the Florida Tax System, a plan that would have eliminated all property taxes on primary residences and replaced the revenue with a flat consumption tax.  Marco also found the time to author 100 Innovative Ideas for Florida's Future – a work that was truly inspired by “grassroots” common sense. The work was compiled as Marco traveled around the state soliciting ideas from ordinary citizens as to how Florida’s government could become both more innovative and more accountable to its citizenry.

Marco is a steadfast advocate of free markets and a structural reform of the tax code; he also supports a balanced budget amendment and a complete halt to reckless deficit spending. As to reforming our troubled immigration system and our unsecured borders, he advocates for verifiably securing our borders and authentically reforming the legal immigration process while opposing a blanket amnesty for illegal immigrants. Marco is grounded in his political philosophy as a thoughtful and principled conservative, and he has the potential to become a transformational leader within the Republican Party who returns the Party to its individual liberty and limited government foundations.

After completing eight years of term-limited service in the Florida Legislature, Marco returned to the private sector as he continued his legal career though his small private law practice in addition to taking a  position at Florida International University as a distinguished visiting professor. Marco currently lives in West Miami with his wife, Jeanette, and their four children.
Marco has now announced his candidacy to be the Republican Party’s nominee in the 2010 U.S. Senate race in Florida. Judging both by what Marco has accomplished in his life to this point, as well as the manner in which he has done so, we can expect Marco to wage a principled, workmanlike campaign that will make those who’ve known him from his earliest years, as well as his newest supporters, extremely proud of his boundless optimism and tireless efforts as he takes his message of principled conservative reform to the United States Senate.
